The cost of work related injuries or illnesses is a huge burden on society and the economy.  We go to work to earn a living, support our families etc and that means we all have a right to come home safely without our health or welfare suffering as a result of work.

There are many hazards at or near workplaces that put us at risk, whether that risk is of a financial nature, or one that poses a risk of damage or harm.  Those risks are generally related to hazards which can be categorised as Physical, Chemical, Electrical and Environmental - there are laws that are put in place to try and reduce the risks associated with these hazards.  

A hazard that is not immediately taken into account, is what we refer to as, "Behavioural" in other words, people do stupid things that put themselves at risk and also others.  Through training we can reduce these behavioural hazards to a degree, but we also need to be vigilant and control risks to health and safety.  

Sometimes, people don't have the time, or they have a responsibility imposed upon them and don't have the necessary training or expertise to effectively meet their obligations under the law. 

Unfortunately, there are no excuses, the law is the law.  Occupational Health and Safety Legislation places a duty of care on everyone at work and you could find yourself dealing with an incident or being visited by an Inspector.
